Dear Congressman Peters and Congressman Gaetz:

On behalf of Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) I am writing in support of H.R. 4143, the Super Pollutants Act of 2019. CRES is proud to support this bipartisan legislation, which will establish U.S. global leadership in implementing a comprehensive plan to reduce short-lived climate pollutants.

The Super Pollutants Act of 2019 encourages the federal government to leverage existing resources and coordinate new efforts to mitigate emissions from short-lived climate pollutants such as black carbon, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC). It commissions additional research from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine to develop recommendations on how to phase-out high global warming HFCs across key sectors of the economy. Finally, it provides technical assistance to support global methane reductions, along with supporting reductions of domestic methane emissions.

Not all greenhouse gases are equal. This legislation is a crucial step for reducing greenhouse gasses that have a disproportionately strong climate-forcing effect. By reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants and developing best practices here in the U.S., we have an opportunity to demonstrate and implement climate solutions that are in-demand in the global marketplace, particularly in fast-growing developing country economies.

Thank you for your leadership on this critical issue, and we look forward to working with you on passage of this legislation.

Sincerely,

Heather Reams

Executive Director, CRES
