Dear Senator Hoeven:
On behalf of Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, I am writing in support of S. 407, the Carbon Capture Modernization Act.
S. 407 will update the Section 48A tax credit, which facilitates the use of carbon capture and sequestration(CCS)technology. The eligibility standards for the tax credit, which was first established in 2005, are not technologically or economically feasible for CCS retrofit projects.Section 48A is a critical federal investment in carbon capture technologies that will help reduce carbon emissions.
By making a relatively minor technical modifications, the tax credit update will make carbon capture retrofits on existing coal plants workable. With the update in place, coal facilities will be able to apply new technologies and reduce carbon emissions. Coal remains an important part of U.S. generating capacity, and new coal plants continue to be built in other parts of the world. By applying advanced coal technology here at home there is a better opportunity for U.S. leadership in this space internationally.
