Heather Reams, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) president, provided the following statement after the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture passed the Sponsoring USDA Sustainability Targets in Agriculture to Incentivize Natural Solutions (SUSTAINS) Act (H.R. 2606) and the Producing Responsible Energy and Conservation Incentives and Solutions for the Environment (PRECISE) Act (H.R. 2518) with bipartisan support:
“CRES congratulates House Agriculture Committee Republican Leader Glenn “GT” Thompson and Rep. Ashley Hinson for their leadership of the SUSTAINS Act and the PRECISE Act, which were reported with bipartisan support by the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture. America’s farmers have been environmental stewards for generations but have largely been left out of the climate conversation—despite the serious consequences the changing climate has on their livelihoods. The SUSTAINS Act encourages private-sector partnerships for agriculture sustainability by allowing businesses who want to lower their carbon footprint to invest in conservation projects with local farmers and ranchers. Moreover, the PRECISE Act gives America’s farmers access to otherwise cost-prohibitive precision agriculture equipment that will lead to increased efficiency and lower emissions while preventing soil degradation. The U.S. House should quickly consider and pass both bills—as well as the Growing Climate Solutions Act—to further empower America’s farmers, ranchers and foresters to be part of our nation’s environmental solutions.”
