CRES Forum Unveils White Paper on Untapped Potential of Geothermal Energy

WASHINGTONCitizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) Forum today unveiled a new white paper, “The Conservative Case for Next Generation Geothermal Energy” authored by Michael Yancey, Director of Congressional Policy at CRES. The paper considers the benefits of geothermal energy and its potential to unleash domestic energy production, reduce dependence on foreign adversaries and cement the United States’ position as the global energy leader. In coordination with the release of the white paper, CRES Forum President Heather Reams published an op-ed highlighting the paper’s findings.

“Geothermal energy, especially advanced geothermal technologies, must be a cornerstone of America’s path to energy dominance—delivering baseload power, bolstering our energy supply and cementing our nation’s role as a global energy leader,” said CRES Forum President Heather Reams. “With our existing expertise, paired with unmatched research and innovation at our national laboratories and universities, there is no question the United States is positioned to dominate the geothermal energy market.”

“At a time when global competitors are racing to control the future of energy, the U.S. must act decisively to maintain its leadership. By cutting bureaucratic red tape, empowering private-sector innovation, and expanding access to domestic resources, policymakers can ensure that America—not China—leads the next energy revolution.”

In addition to detailing the untapped potential of this critical resource, the white paper also presents three critical policy proposals to encourage geothermal development:

  1. Enact comprehensive permitting reform to cut red tape and accelerate project timelines.
  1. Maintain technology-neutral tax incentives like the 45Y and 48E credits to spur private investment.
  1. Prioritize robust research and development funding to reduce drilling costs and advance next-generation geothermal technologies.
