This week, Senator Susan Collins and Representative Dave Reichert joined a bipartisan group of House and Senate colleagues to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). Senator Collins and Rep. Reichert continue to be leaders in standing up for clean air and clean water in the United States Congress.
As Senator Collins said, “Too often, I think, in the debates in Congress, it’s posited as if it were the economy versus the environment. Well in a state like Maine, the environment is the economy. Without our tourism industry, our working forests, our beautiful vistas, our economy would not be what it is today.”
Voters agree with Sen. Collins and Rep. Reichert that we need to be good stewards of the environment. Recent polling conducted by TargetPoint Consulting on behalf of Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions found that 85% of voters agreed that promoting better health with reduced air pollution and clean water was an important reason for taking action on climate change. And 76% agreed that being responsible stewards of God’s creation was an important reason for taking action.
