Katko Leads Efforts to Create Jobs and Grow New York’s Clean Energy Economy
WASHINGTON – Today, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) formally announced its endorsement of Rep. John Katko in his reelection bid for the U.S. House in New York’s 24th Congressional District.
In order to receive CRES’s endorsement, candidates must acknowledge a role for the federal government in reducing America’s carbon emissions and developing a robust clean energy industry, as well as demonstrate leadership on policy initiatives related to climate change and emissions reduction.
“Congressman John Katko has played a key role in advancing the clean energy technologies that have created over 159,000 jobs in New York,” said CRES Executive Director Heather Reams. “During his time in the U.S. House, Congressman Katko has worked to promote a safe and healthy environment and supported job-creating policies that strengthen our energy economy. CRES is proud to formally endorse John Katko in his reelection bid for the U.S. House in New York’s 24th Congressional District.”
“I’m honored to be endorsed by the Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions. As a nation, we must work together to advance commonsense initiatives that preserve our environment for generations to come. In Congress, I’ve been a strong proponent of legislation that expands cleaner forms of energy, such as nuclear energy. Locally, I’ve worked tirelessly to support the James A. FitzPatrick and Nine Mile Point nuclear power facilities, which provide safe and clean nuclear power to thousands of local families, and employs hundreds of hardworking Central New Yorkers. Moving forward, I will continue this work to encourage the development of dependable, abundant and safe energy,” said U.S. Rep. John Katko.
CRES-endorsed candidates have contributed to a policy landscape to advance clean energy and emissions reductions in a way that puts the needs of the country first. Examples of initiatives and legislation championed by CRES and endorsed candidates have included reforming and reauthorizing ARPA-E and advanced nuclear research and development; commonsense, market-based emissions-reduction policies, including legislation to help farmers, ranchers and landowners embrace sustainable farming practices and participate in voluntary carbon markets; and policy solutions to incentivize the next generation of hydropower, wind, solar and geothermal generation, among others.
Congressman Katko’s record on clean energy includes the following:
- Co-sponsored the Growing Climate Solutions Act, legislation that helps solve technical entry barriers for farmer and forest landowner participation in carbon credit markets.
- Co-sponsored the Renewable Energy Extension Act, a bill that extends the energy tax credit for certain renewable resources and the credit for residential energy efficient property for five years.
- Co-sponsored the Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act, legislation that promotes development of wind, solar, and geothermal energy on public lands.
- Co-sponsored the Nuclear Powers America Act, which would provide existing nuclear power plants with an investment tax credit.
- Co-sponsored the Pipeline Safety Act, legislation that reauthorizes federal pipeline safety programs.
- Co-sponsored the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Reauthorization Act of 2019, which is a successful DOE program which provides funding for transformative, early stage energy research in support of American energy security and economic competitiveness.
- Co-sponsored the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, a bill to create jobs and drive innovation and economic growth in the United States by supporting and promoting the manufacture of next generation clean technologies.
- Co-sponsored the U.S. House resolution formally recognizing National Clean Energy Week 2020.
